Emotionally Responsive Illustration
Videos in which teens talked about their passions and dreams were easy and fun to work on. Their enthusiasm and personalities shined through, which let the illustrations take a back seat.
In more complicated or emotional videos, the illustrations needed to be carefully planned to make sure they enhanced the messaging rather than taking away from the bigger story.
Supporting An Emotional Story Arc
Often, the illustrations needed to support a delicate emotional story arc. In a lesson about being proud of your roots, one of the instructors, Rogelio, tells a story about changing his name to “Roy” as a kid to avoid people mispronouncing his name.
The accompanying illustrations needed to show that the story wasn’t JUST about Rogelio being annoyed with his teachers and classmates. He was telling a much bigger story about a journey from shame to personal pride.
Supporting broader narratives like this meant paying attention to small details in each illustration. In this video, it meant paying close attention to each characters’ subtle facial expressions. Kid Rogelio’s face is showing more shame than annoyance.
